Civil War Portraits

I met and photographed Howell at a recent Civil War Days event at the Heritage Museum of Orange County.  Howell plays a circa 1870 Lenhart left-handed tuba, and became interested in Civil War re-enactment via an introduction to a group through Tuba Christmas.  I found him with several members of a military band who were warming up when I arrived.

I photographed Howell at the event and was so taken with his look that when I forwarded the images on to him later, I asked if he would be interested in sitting for a more formal / controlled studio portrait session.  To my delight, he agreed!  Better still, he agreed to model for my studio lighting students at a local college!  So, not only did I get to work with him, but my class was provided an incredible opportunity to create some beautiful portraits.

Some of my favorites from the session:

"Civil War Musician" I met Howell a few weeks ago at the Civil War Days event at the Heritage Musicum of Orange County. He was gracious enough to allow me to photograph him in studio this week. (Series inspired by @GlynDewis ' "Home Guard" photographs and his awesome work with color grading.)

We even got to do a few film images with the Mamiya RB67 Pro SD…

I’ll be seeing Howell again at the Huntington Beach Labor Day Civil War days event.  Planning to take the 4×5 view camera to see if we can create some more awesome portraits…

Share and Enjoy!
