A Pair of Wild Horses… Photographing Mustangs

P-51 and Ford 302 BOSS MustangsHi Friends,

I had a rare opportunity to photograph a pair of Mustangs this past weekend: one, a classic 1947 North American P-51D (“Lady Alice”) – doubtless one of the finest aircraft ever built; and the other, a 2012 Ford BOSS 302–one of the finest muscle cars on the planet.  How cool is that!

Many thanks to Dick Fields for arranging the shoot — I know it wasn’t easy to get clearances to be on the runway–and to Dr. Ken Wagner and Dale Havlu for bringing the horses to the party!

  • What an outstanding set of photos!!! I am Dale Havlu’s brother, living in northern Nevada. I work as a contractor for L-3 communications, currently the contractor for Topgun, also know as NSAWC at the Naval Air Station Fallon Nevada. NSAWC stable includes F-18 C’s, F-18 Super Hornets, and F-18 G “Growlers”. I also maintain F-16’s assigned here. It is probably the “FINEST” job anyone could ever dream of!!! Sadly, this last Monday March 18, 2013, a couple of the dregs of society managed to steal the car trailer my brother owns from a “Secure” location. Inside the trailer was his beloved 1998 Mustang Cobra. A sign of the times is that it will be a miracle if the Cobra is ever located again in one piece. So sad, although that is one of the reasons, that I no longer reside in Southern California. I am born a native Californian, and actually don’t miss the state one bit. Thank you for the photos of the P-15 (indeed a rare bird), and both Mustangs my brother owns!!

    • Thanks for the kind words! So sorry to hear of Dale’s loss of the Cobra. Infuriating!

My nephew, David, is in the Air National Guard, stationed in Fort Wayne, IN, where he’s responsible for maintaining the fleet of A-10C Warthogs. Being around such amazing aircraft as you and David would be a dream come true! Better still – the opportunity to PHOTOGRAPH them is MY dream come true!
