Rusted Trucks Self-Assignment

A friend told me about a collection of rusty old trucks at a local business.  Had a little time today so I thought I’d check it out.  Of course, midday direct sun is not typically prime time for photography.  HDR to the rescue…

Jonsi-Inspired Portrait Shoot with Ian

A little over a year ago, my friend and director of Masquer Ministries, Ian, introduced me to the music of Jón “Jónsi” Þór Birgisson - lead singer of the Icelandic post-rock group, Sigur Rós.  I’ve been a fan ever since. Apart from his music, Jónsi had a particular look for his “Go” album tour that I thought could be really cool inspiration for a portrait shoot in combination with a grunge / industrial setting.  It would need to be dramatic and colorful, and I figured if anyone could pull it off, it would be Ian. So, we talked about it, made some plans, and then kind of shelved the idea until the right location came along.

Well, it took me a while to find the location, but finally, this week, we pulled it together at an old, empty hardware store in Yorba Linda.  I’d photographed Cat there a week or so ago, and knew at that time, it would be the perfect location for our shoot with Ian.

So, with the help of Kelly Nelson, fellow Masquer Ministries cast member and makeup artist extraordinaire, we met this week at the hardware store, and spent a couple hours exploring the portrait options.  Here are a few of my favorites from the day:

What a blast to work with such talented folks!  Many thanks to Ian and Kelly for taking an afternoon out of their busy schedules to indulge a guy with a weird vision.  And thanks too, to Cat,who, when not in FRONT of the camera, is an indispensable photography assistant!

For the gearheads: these images where made with a Nikon D2x; Nikkor 24-70 f/2.8 lens combo.  Lighting was a balance of ambient (dirty south-facing window) light and a Nikon SB-800 in either a 22-inch gridded beauty dish or Paul C. Buff 10 x 36″ stripbank.

Gamer…the Portrait

Hi Friends,

In between client work, it’s important to keep the creative juices flowing. Having been subject to hours of squealing tires, revving engines, explosions, and apparent talking to himself (with the online games), I thought I’d try to capture some of the essence of the gaming experience with my son as prime portrait candidate.

Vintage Fashion Shoot – Japanese and American ’40s / Modern

Hi Friends,

Just before Christmas last year, I did some family Christmas portraits for my good friend, Booker, at an empty 1920s era hardware store in Yorba Linda, CA.  After we finished, I explored the shop a little further and found a terrific space that I just had to come back to for a portrait shoot with my daughter.

Well, today was the day… I had in mind two types of images: one contrasting modern Japanese “kodona” or “ouji” fashion with the vintage look of the venue, and another attempting to recreate a “classic” Japanese formal portrait.  The store, built in 1927, was probably last decorated in the 50s or 60s. Think velvet fleur-de-lis wallpaper, and bare plaster with 50 years worth of peeling paint, and you’re starting to get the picture of the space.  My model / daughter, Cat, has a terrific fashion sense – very contemporary Japanese.  She was perfect for the role.  My mother-in-love, Keiko, has a 1940s-era kimono that Cat could wear for the second look, so we were all set!  And to top it all off, Booker arranged for unfettered access to the shoot venue for the afternoon.  And my dear friend, Royce, was able to join us as well! A perfect storm of photography!

But wait…there’s more!  As if it couldn’t get any better, our friend, Mariana, a lovely model specializing in 1940s vintage style, was able to join us for the afternoon!  Wow! Icing on the cake!

Anyway, a few of my favorites from the shoot.  Cat in “kodona” Japanese fashion:

And a few of Mariana:

Such are perfect days made of!  Thanks to all who made it possible: Cat and Mariana, Keiko, Booker and Royce!  And special thanks to Dale for letting us use the space for the afternoon!

Thanks for dropping by!

Iowa Newspaper Runs Story on Ana & Brian’s Medieval Wedding!

Hi Friends,

Last August, I had the privilege of photographing Ana and Brian’s medieval-themed wedding event: ”Weddageddon.”

A few weeks ago, Orange County Bride Magazine featured it on their blog.

This week, Ana’s hometown newspaper, the Altoona Herald, ran a story on the “most unique wedding of 2011″ featuring my images.  Pretty exciting stuff, no?

Here’s the reprint from the Altoona Herald: Weddageddon reprint-Altoona Herald

Whether your wedding is a themed event like Ana and Brian’s, or a more traditional affair, I’m available to photograph your once-in-a-lifetime day in a way that will recall those special memories each time you look at your photographs.

I’d welcome the opportunity to talk with you about your wedding plans. Feel free to contact me via the website, email at jon@jonhaverstickstudio.com or by phone at 714-679-4863 to discuss your wedding photography dreams!
